The best websites are not necessarily the most attractive. Once you have created your website and have some great content to share with the internet world, you will need to properly market the site so it reaches the screens of the millions surfing on the internet every day.

The quickest way to find what you need on the internet is to use a search engine. These amazing tools can get you a large number of quality websites within seconds of typing your question. On average users will only need the first maybe second page depending on the nature of their query, so how do you get your website on these pages?

The technique used to push a website up the rankings is referred to as Search Engine Optimisation or SEO. This is basically making your website easily accessible to search engines where they can find and check your content so they can include it in their search results when a lucky surfer wants what you have. Being on those first two pages is massively important if you want people to see your website. There are a number of key things which can be done to increase your chances of having a search engine friendly website.

Top tip 1- Google loves nice easy sites
Making sure your site is simple and clean will mean search engines, mainly Google, will be able to 'crawl' the site effectively. You will not get ranked any better for amazing graphics or flash images, keep it simple with correct folder structure, site map and HTML readability.

Top tip 2 - URL must be nice and friendly
When search engines look at website addresses they like to be able to read key words separated by hyphens or underscores. Keep number or code out of main pages as this will put search engines off your page.

Top tip 3 - Invisible flash, what's the point?
When building a site it is easy to be drawn into using flash images and detailed graphics. The problem with this is there needs to be text-based descriptions attached to the images in the HTML code to enable search engines to fine your site. The HTML text is important for bots to find your pages.

Top tip 4 - Keyword ninja!
When researching your market it is important to do keyword research too. These are the buzz words or phrases that are searched for and used every day in your niche. Decide on keywords which are used by people to find your site and use these as your basis for content. Your URL is the first place to have your keywords, if possible. Next, your homepage needs to contain some too as it is the landing page for many visitors. The content on your site must contain these keywords, do not spam them but cleverly insert in your text for clear searching.

Top tip 5 - Add fresh content often
Adding new and unique content to your blog will keep customers informed of new developments but it will also alert search engines to the fact that your site is active and publishing new content. This will mean it is worth ranking regularly and will help it creep up the rankings.

Top tip 6 - Use social media
Using social media to promote your blog is an important tool in SEO. You can post content to multiple social media sites to create huge numbers of backlinks to your site which will increase visibility.

Top tip 7 - Backlinks
It is important when posting content outside of your site that you use a link in the text or author sig to link back to your site. This will create something called backlinks which will increase rankings in the search engines.
