(HostGator) The Green Hosting Company

There are a lot of good reasons to think about using HostGator as your webhosting company. One that you may not have considered is their environmental record. They have taken steps to significantly reduce their carbon footprint so that they do not have as big an impact on the environment as other hosting companies. Most people recognize the importance of limiting the impact they have on the environment and are looking for ways to do it, transferring your websites to HostGator is one of the easiest.

Most people don't really think about their webhost as being a major polluter but in fact most of them are. The main reason is the enormous amount of electricity that they have to use. A server requires a lot of electricity just to keep it running and since it needs to be kept running twenty four hours a day the energy requirement really adds up. When you consider that most hosting companies have dozens of servers you can see where there might be a problem.

In addition to the energy that is required to run the servers there is also a huge amount of energy required to cool them. Servers produce a lot of heat and they have to be kept cool to keep them working properly. This not only takes a lot of electricity but also requires the use of harmful chemicals. It is therefore a good idea to choose a hosting company that has taken steps to reduce its carbon footprint.

There are a few webhosting companies that have gone green and have greatly reduced their emission output; the biggest of these by far is HostGator. The main way that they do this is by purchasing wind power which then gets fed into the power grid. It is not really practical to build wind turbines next to their server farm so this is the best approach. In fact they actually put far more wind power into the grid than they use which really helps to keep their carbon foot print down.

The other thing that they have done to reduce their emissions is to take steps to reduce the amount of cooling that is needed. In large part this is done by designing the building that houses their servers in a way that dissipates heat effectively. They also make sure that they are using the best equipment available as it is more efficient and therefore gives off less heat.
