Apple Launches iPhone 4S in More Than 20 New Countries

 

Apple on Friday launched the iPhone 4S in more than 20 additional countries, including several in South America, Africa, the Middle East, and Asia.

According to a report from MacRumors, those countries are: Bahrain, Brazil, Chile, Egypt, Israel, Jordan, Kuwait, Malaysia, Morocco, Peru, the Philippines, Qatar, Russia, Saudi Arabia, South Africa, Taiwan, Thailand, Tunisia, Turkey, United Arab Emirates, and Vietnam.

Apple did not immediately respond to a request for confirmation.

In at least one country, the iPhone 4S carries with it a rather hefty price tag. MacRumors said due to import duties levied on electronics, the price of an iPhone 4S in Brazil starts at R$2599, or about $1,400 USD.

In other countries, however, pricing seems to be similar to what it is in the U.S., MacRumors said. For example, customers in the United Arab Emirates, Malaysia, Taiwan, and Thailand can buy the device for between $700 and $900 directly from Apple's online store. In the U.S., you can buy a contract-free, unlocked 16GB iPhone 4S for $649.

The iPhone 4S is now available in more than 60 countries. In October, the iPhone 4S first launched in seven countries, and later that month Apple added 22 more. In November, Apple added another 14 countries, including Hong Kong, where pre-orders reportedly sold out within 10 minutes of Apple making the device available.

The iPhone 4S is in hot demand; in fact, NM Insight found that it's the most talked-about smartphone of the year. Additionally, if you want to pick one up at your local Apple Store, you still have to reserve it online first.

Sony launches PS Vita in Japan, releases online user guide for it

After almost a year of officially announcing it, Sony has finally launched the PlayStation Vita. For now, however, the device is only available in Japan with US availability starting from February 22, 2012 onwards.

Sony will be selling three variants of the PS Vita in the US, the Wi-Fi-only mode, Wi-Fi+3G model and Wi-Fi+3G model with a 4GB memory card, limited edition case and ‘Little Deviants’ game and will be priced at $249.99, $299.99 and $349.99 respectively.

Meanwhile, Sony has also released an online user guide for the PS Vita, which details all of the functions and gives a closer look at the device. You can learn, for example, that the PS Vita uses a proprietary memory card for storage purposes and will not work with standard microSD or even Memory Stick Micro cards, or that the battery will last up to 3-5 hours while playing games and up to 5 hours while playing videos, or that you can take a screenshot by pressing the PS button and the Start button at the same time.

Androidland launches in Melbourne courtesy Google and Telstra, lets you get your droid on

Google and Australian telecommunications company Telstra have joined forces to launch the world’s first store dedicated to Android. Called the Androidland, it’s not just a place to buy Android devices but also where you can experience all the different features in the OS and just enjoy yourself.

There is a lot to do in this Android-themed store, decked in the traditional Android green color. You can play Angry Birds on a giant touchscreen display, Androidify yourself or check out the world on a massive display using Google Earth. They have even gone as far as to have a gingerbread scent in the store and a grass scent where there is grass. And then of course, you have handsets from all the major manufacturers, which you can try out for yourself.

This store is one of a kind and can be found on 246 Bourke Street in Melbourne, Australia but if this one is a success Google may want to invest in more of these around the world.

Philips launches W920 Android smartphone, packs a 4.3-inch display and a 5 megapixel camera

Philips has not had much of a success in the mobile phone segment. Many people don’t even know that they exist in this segment and you can’t really blame them for that. Philips mobile phones so far have been mediocre at best and if you see one you wouldn’t even remember its name in T-minus 1 minute.

Now, however, they have launched a new Android smartphone that is likely to stay in your memory for a bit longer. Say hello to the Philips W920.

So what’s so great about it? Well, nothing much to be honest but it does have a 4.3-inch TFT 800 x 480 display, 5 megapixel camera with auto-focus and flash, 3G HSDPA, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, GPS, Android 2.2 Froyo with Adobe Flash support. There was no information available regarding the processor specifications but the phone does have 512MB of RAM. Hopefully, there will be at least a 1GHz processor ticking underneath that gold and black body.

No mention about the price of the device but if I had to guess I would say it would be around $300 unlocked.
