As of this writing, the following GPS technology is available only in the U.S., but no doubt its popularity will be spreading quickly. At any rate, new on the scene is the Garmin GTU 10 which is a GPS locator that combines a web-based tracking service with GPS technology. The unit is a small, lightweight and waterproof device which can effortlessly be attached to a backpack, pet collar, property or whatever it is that you feel is valuable.
This device is attractive on a number of levels. The first, is that once you have purchased it, you also receive a full year of standard tracking coverage service within the U.S. All that Garmin requires is that you register and activate the unit, which can easily be done online. After you have completed this minor requirement, you will be able to view the location of your loved one, pet or property from the comfort and convenience of your computer or smart phone.
Additionally, an added bonus for iPhone users, is that an app is available for your mobile devices. This tracker app will allow you to locate the GTU 10 unit and compare your location to the location and direction of the unit. Combined with this is also the ability to automatically route you directly to the unit. It doesn't get much easier than that, does it? No more flyers attached to telephone poles and street lights advertising your telephone number all over the area.
One of my favorite features is that this technology gives you the capability to create as many as ten geo-fences for your device. According to Wikipedia, "A geo-fence is a virtual perimeter on a geographic area using a location-based service, so that when the geo-fencing device enters or exits the area a notification is generated. The notification can contain information about the location of the device and might be sent to a mobile telephone or an email account". In other words, if and when your loved one, pet or property crosses one of your geo-fences, a text or email message is sent to you within approximately 30 seconds. This allows you to locate and retrieve your loved one, pet or property fairly quickly while also putting your mind at rest.
Garmin GTU 10 is priced at just under $200.00 (two hundred dollars), and comes with accessories to make it easy to attach the device, as well as a USB cable, a case and of course, a manual. As technology advances, our lives are not just being made easier, but we are also enjoying a safer and more trouble free way of living.
