Apple has launched iPhone 4S in seven countries back in October and gradually added new environment in the months since. The latest group brings the total number of countries which have 4S iPhone to more than 90.

As the fastest growing market for the iPhone, China's most of the country on the list. CEO Tim Cook last year called China "lock" to Apple's earnings. It seems that the Chinese fanboys be ravenous for Apple gadgets, too. In fact, just a week after the iPhone 4S went into sales in individual States, was rumored, the phone was for the more than 2 000 dollars in Beijing markets.

Ticonderoga securities analyst Brian White speculated in a note Wednesday, investors, which Apple timed Chinese iPhone, 4S roll just before Chinese new year (which begins January 23) to give people time to phone as gifts.

Apple Designer Jonathan 'Jony' Ive Awarded Knighthood

AppId is over the quota
AppId is over the quota
Jonathan Ive

Apple designer Jonathan Ive can now add "Sir" to his title; he was named a Knight Commander of the British Empire (KBE) on Saturday as part of England's New Year's Honors List.

London-born Ive serves as vice president of industrial design at Apple, reporting to CEO Tim Cook. He has led Cupertino's highly regarded design team since 1996, according to his Apple bio, having started in 1992.

In a statement provided to the BBC, Ive said the honor was "absolutely thrilling."

"I discovered at an early age that all I've ever wanted to do is design," he said.

Honors are awarded twice a year by the Queen; on her birthday in mid-June and at the New Year. Anyone can be nominated, but they must be approved by a nominations team and the Queen. In all, almost 1,000 people were honored today, many of them local heroes.

Art historian John Patrick Richardson also received the KBE honor with Ive.

There are five classes in the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire, which was created by George V in 1917 during World War I. The two most prestigious classes, which carry with them the "Sir" or "Dame" designation, are the Knight or Dame Grand Cross of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire and the Knight or Dame Commander of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire.

The origins of knighthood, however, "are obscure, but they are said to date back to ancient Rome, where there was a knightly class Ordo Equestris (an order of mounted nobles)," according to the U.K. government.

As the BBC noted, Ive was made a Commander of the British Empire (CBE) in 2005, the third highest honor, but it did not allow him to use the "Sir" title.

As described in Walter Isaacson's biography of Steve Jobs, Ive—known as Jony—thought about quitting Apple in 1997, the year Jobs returned as CEO. Ive was frustrated by the focus on profit rather than product design, Isaacson wrote, but Jobs changed that.

"I remember very clearly Steve announcing that our goal is not just to make money but to make great products," Ive told Isaacson.

Ive grew up the son of a silversmith who valued a handmade product. He landed at Apple after his London-based design firm, Tangerine, was awarded a contract job with Cupertino. He soon gained the respect of Jobs, who later told Isaacson that Ive was a "spiritual partner" at Apple.

Earlier this year, there were reports that Ive would leave Apple in order to spend more time in the U.K., but a report in the Daily Mail shot down those rumors.

Around the same time, there were also rumors that Jobs had been considered for knighthood, but the designation was blocked by former U.K. Prime Minister Gordon Brown because Jobs rejected an invitation to speak at a Labour Party event.

Another famous tech figure, former Microsoft head Bill Gates, was awarded an honorary knighthood in 2005. Full knighthoods are only available to citizens of countries where Queen Elizabeth II is queen. She can award honorary knighthoods to anyone else, but they cannot use the "Sir" title, so even if Brown had not allegedly blocked Jobs's nomination, the late Apple chief could never be addressed as Sir Steve Jobs.

Apple flexes its legal muscle as another patent won makes it harder for other smartphone platforms

Have you ever been in the middle of a phone call and had the need to quick switch applications, perhaps to check an address or a location on the map, well unless your using an iPhone, this handy feature might not be around for long.

We’re only half way through the week and Apple have already blocked HTC (and by extension Google) from utilizing a feature already implemented within Android (at least in the US), but now it appears that another such instance could disappear from any smartphone not touched by the hand of Apple.

Apple’s latest patent acquisition, entitled “Portable electronic device with graphical user interface supporting application switching”, is essentially a patent that refers to a smartphone’s ability to switch applications whilst in a phone call. Now that Apple own such a patent, it will become increasingly difficult for any rival smartphone OS’s (primarily Android) to sport such a feature or at least implement it elegantly.

The biggest issue faced by rivals of the Cupertino-based company, are the broad and somewhat vague descriptions of what this patent encompasses. What follows are the terms of the patent itself and CBR’s 5-point breakdown of the key aspects they address:

Portable electronic device with graphical user interface supporting application switching terms
A method, comprising: at a portable electronic device with a touch screen display: displaying on the touch screen display a first user interface for a phone application during a phone call; detecting activation of a menu icon or menu button during the phone call, in response to detecting activation of the menu icon or menu button, replacing the first user interface for the phone application with a menu of application icons including an icon for the phone application and an icon for a non-telephone application; maintaining the phone call while displaying the menu of application icons on the touch screen display; detecting a finger gesture on an application icon in the menu of application icons other than the phone application icon; in response to detecting the finger gesture on the application icon other than the phone application icon, displaying a corresponding application user interface on the touch screen display while continuing to maintain the phone call and modifying the corresponding application user interface to include a switch application icon that is not displayed in the corresponding application user interface when there is no ongoing phone call; detecting a finger gesture on the touch screen display on the switch application icon; and in response to detecting the finger gesture on the switch application icon, replacing display of the corresponding application user interface with the first user interface for the phone application while continuing to maintain the phone call.

CBS’s breakdown of the patent
1. During a call on a mobile device with a touch screen, with the phone user interface showing, the users touches either a menu button or an icon.
2. The device replaces the phone interface with a menu of application icons, including the phone icon.
3. A user’s finger gesture chooses another app.
4. The app’s interface comes up, all the while not dropping the call. The interface includes a “switch application icon” only when a phone call is occurring.
5. The user performs a finger gesture on the switch application icon, taking the user back to the phone interface.

No doubt rival developers will find ways around the issues here, but chances are, it won’t be easy and their solutions, not as pretty. Patent ownership is the hidden war fought between OEM’s, away from the high street marketing and TV advertising. We’ll have to see if this affects the likes of Android and it’s competitors, excluding iOS of course.

Do you find yourself using the app switching in call feature and would it be an inconvenience if you had to change the way you operate your phone? Let us know in the comments.

Apple App Store faces issues with the interface on iOS 3.1.3 devices, fixes itself automatically

Last week people started reporting a strange problem with the Apple App Store program installed on their iPhone and iPod touches. This made it nearly unusable because it would hide the buttons to download the apps, along with the screenshot and other app information.

The interesting thing about this issue though was that only those running iOS 3.1.3 were reporting it and as you may know that was the latest update that the first generation iPhone and iPod touch is capable of running. However, it seems now though that the issue has been fixed.

Engadget is reporting that things are now back to normal, with the App Store program working just fine. Whether it was a temporary glitch or something Apple remotely fixed is not yet known. From the user-end though you don’t have to do anything as it sorts itself out on its own.

The screenshot above shows a slightly different texture to the top and bottom bar, which is unlike the glossy finish you usually see. Perhaps Apple was in the process of revamping the interface of the App Store when this happened, although it still does not explain why it only affected devices running iOS 3.1.3.

Explosion at Factory Run By Apple Supplier Pegatron Injures 61

Pegatron Explosion

A weekend explosion at a Shanghai factory run by Apple supplier Pegatron injured 61 workers, 23 of whom were hospitalized according to the Taiwan-based components maker. An explosion in May at another factory operated by Apple's main parts supplier, Foxconn, killed three workers.

Apple and its Taiwan-based suppliers of parts for iPhones, iPads, Macs, and other devices have come under fire from labor advocacy groups for allegedly unsafe and exploitative working conditions at several mainland China-based factories in recent years. In addition to several explosions and other worker safety incidents in the last 15 months, a string of worker suicides at plants run by Foxconn has raised serious questions about how Apple's partners treat their employees.

The most recent explosion occurred at a plant in Shanghai's Songjiang industrial park that is operated by Pegatron subsidiary Riteng Computer Accessory Co., according to Reuters. Chinese state television reported the explosion in the video below.

The Riteng factory had not actually been officially opened when the explosion tore through it over the weekend, according to a Pegatron executive quoted by the news agency.

"The factory has not started operations yet," said Charles Lin, Pegatron's chief financial officer. "Part of the facility is still under pre-operation inspection and part is running trial production."

The plant was reportedly set to begin making back panels for Apple's iPad 2, according to China's Yi Cai Daily newspaper, though neither Pegatron nor Apple would confirm that. An analyst quoted by Reuters opined that the explosion would only cause "relatively minor" disruption to Apple's supply chain, unlike the explosion at Foxconn's Chengdu, which involved a more important Apple supplier.

"It's a setback but it's relatively minor," Sterne Agee analyst Shaw Wu told Reuters. "The Foxconn explosion was a much bigger deal but still they were able to work around it fairly quickly."

Samsung Sues Apple Over Smiley Face Input Method

 Emoticon

Just when you thought ongoing legal battles over smartphone patents couldn't get any more bizarre, along comes a new claim by Samsung that Apple is infringing on its intellectual property rights with the way the latter company processes smiley faces on its iPhones.

The claim concerns one of four new patents that Samsung asserted before a German court late last week, according to Florian Mueller's Foss Patents blog. Samsung is also suing Apple over three more patent claims that were asserted this past April, while Apple has six patent claims lodged against Samsung in Germany, including one concerning Apple's slide-to-unlock mechanism for its iPhones.

Samsung's new claims concern its patents for a "method and apparatus for reporting inter-frequency measurement using RACH message in a communication system;" a "method for configuring gain factors for uplink service in radio telecommunication system;" a "speech output device for data displayed on mobile telephone converts data from display into speech data for output via loudspeaker;" and an "emoticon input method for mobile terminal."

Some of those claims against Apple have been made by Samsung in other jurisdictions, including the U.S., Mueller notes.

"I wouldn't be surprised if Apple decided to respond to this escalation by bringing several additional patent infringement lawsuits against Samsung in Germany," he writes. "Since Apple already has six lawsuits going against Samsung in Mannheim, it might start a few new ones in Munich. Apple is also suing Motorola and HTC in both regional courts in parallel. And in a third one (Düsseldorf), Apple has its design-related litigation going with Samsung. Two hearings are scheduled in those litigations for next week."

In last week's session in the German court, Samsung appears to have withdrawn an earlier request for a ruling on Apple products like the iPhone 4S that use Qualcomm baseband chips, but "did not waive its rights with respect to baseband patent assertions against the iPhone 4S in general," Mueller reports.

ITC Bans Import of HTC Android Devices in Apple Patent Fight

HTC Android

The International Trade Commission (ITC) on Monday ruled in favor of Apple in its patent battle against HTC, ordering an import ban on certain HTC devices starting April 19, 2012.

HTC will be allowed to import refurbished devices with the infringing patent until Dec. 19, 2013 for replacement purposes, but the company cannot refer to new devices as refurbished, the ITC said in its ruling.

As patent blogger Florian Mueller explained in a blog post, Apple's victory is a "narrow" one. The ban applies to Android-based devices that include a "data tapping patent." One example of this technology is a phone number within an email that you can tap to bring up the phone dialer and place a call automatically.

"If Google can implement this popular feature, which users of modern-day smartphones really expect, without infringing on the two patent claims found infringed, this import ban won't have any effect whatsoever," Mueller wrote. "Otherwise HTC will have to remove this feature, which would put HTC at a competitive disadvantage as compared to other smartphone makers, including other Android device makers."

Mueller noted that the ITC found that HTC does not infringe on a "much broader and potentially more impactful patent on realtime signal processing." That, he said, "could have had much more impact on HTC and, more generally, Android than the data tapping patent."

In a statement, an HTC spokesman said the company was "gratified" that the ITC did not rule in favor of Apple on all the patents in question and pledged to alter the infringing technology.

"We are very pleased with the determination and we respect it. However, the [data tapping] patent is a small UI experience and HTC will completely remove it from all of our phones soon."

Apple did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

In July, an ITC judge found that HTC infringed on two of 10 Apple patents. HTC and Apple both requested reviews in that decision, prolonging the process.

"Apple would have preferred for the Commission to adopt the [administrative law judge's] recommendation, but in the event that a review would take place (as it did), Apple also wanted to raise some questions of its own and asked for another look at the two patents the ALJ did not deem infringed," Mueller wrote today. "But as I expected, the review focused on the two patents the ALJ deemed infringed."

Regardless, the ITC ruling is "progress" for Apple, Mueller said. If Cupertino can challenge handset makers on other data-tapping-esque patents, it could "really have competitive impact with its many litigations targeting Android," Mueller concluded.

In addition to the ITC, Apple and HTC are also battling over patents in several courts throughout the world.

Today's decision was twice-delayed. The D.C-based ITC was first scheduled to rule on Dec. 6, but that got pushed to Dec 14 and then today.

Earlier this month, PCMag mobile analyst Sascha Segan suggested that an Apple win is also a victory for Microsoft. For more, see An HTC Android Ban is Microsoft's Dream.

Today's ruling comes several weeks after the ITC ruled that Apple's products don't infringe on patents held by S3 Graphics, a company in the process of being acquired by HTC.

Apple Launches iPhone 4S in More Than 20 New Countries

 Apple iPhone 4S (AT&T)

Apple on Friday launched the iPhone 4S in more than 20 additional countries, including several in South America, Africa, the Middle East, and Asia.

According to a report from MacRumors, those countries are: Bahrain, Brazil, Chile, Egypt, Israel, Jordan, Kuwait, Malaysia, Morocco, Peru, the Philippines, Qatar, Russia, Saudi Arabia, South Africa, Taiwan, Thailand, Tunisia, Turkey, United Arab Emirates, and Vietnam.

Apple did not immediately respond to a request for confirmation.

In at least one country, the iPhone 4S carries with it a rather hefty price tag. MacRumors said due to import duties levied on electronics, the price of an iPhone 4S in Brazil starts at R$2599, or about $1,400 USD.

In other countries, however, pricing seems to be similar to what it is in the U.S., MacRumors said. For example, customers in the United Arab Emirates, Malaysia, Taiwan, and Thailand can buy the device for between $700 and $900 directly from Apple's online store. In the U.S., you can buy a contract-free, unlocked 16GB iPhone 4S for $649.

The iPhone 4S is now available in more than 60 countries. In October, the iPhone 4S first launched in seven countries, and later that month Apple added 22 more. In November, Apple added another 14 countries, including Hong Kong, where pre-orders reportedly sold out within 10 minutes of Apple making the device available.

The iPhone 4S is in hot demand; in fact, NM Insight found that it's the most talked-about smartphone of the year. Additionally, if you want to pick one up at your local Apple Store, you still have to reserve it online first.

Apple loses legal battle against Samsung in the US, could still win the war

Apple had filed for a preliminary injunction against Samsung in the US court to block the sales of the Galaxy devices. Unfortunately for Apple, the court has declined to grant the said injunction, which means Samsung can continue to sell their devices in the US. However, the legal war between the two companies is far from over and Apple could still swing this to their advantage.

As it happens, the reason Apple failed to get an injunction against Samsung is that Apple could not prove to the court that Samsung infringing on their patents could cost them irreparable damages.

Apple had filed for the injunction based on four patents, two for smartphone design, one for tablet design and one for software. In case of the first two patents, the US court found that Apple’s patents were likely valid and that Samsung has been infringing on them. However, as mentioned before, Apple failed to prove how this could cause them irreparable damages.

In case of the tablet, the court found Samsung infringing on Apple’s patent and that it could be costing Apple irreparable damages, however, the actual patent itself was found to be invalid due to the presence of prior art.

Lastly, in case of the software, once again the court found Apple’s patents valid and Samsung was found to be guilty of infringing them but again, Apple could not prove how this could be causing them irreparable damage.

Due to this Apple was not granted the injunction but as mentioned before, Apple could still pursue this during the next hearing and if they manage to prove in court that this is causing them damage then the court would have to ban the sales of the devices in question in the US.

You can learn more about this from the source link below.

Samsung strikes again at the heart of Apple fans mocking the lacking 4G LTE capability of the iPhone [VIDEO]

After the releasing its controversial video on the web mocking Apple’s iPhone 4S and its fans waiting for its launch alike, Samsung has now stick its finger deeper in the wound and has decided to continue pouring salt in it by launching yet another clip.

This time the Korean manufacturer targets more at the missing 4G LTE feature of the iPhone 4S rather than its size or brand-obsessed fans. This doesn’t mean Apple fans are going to like it though.

The video shows the same people we are already familiar with from the last video standing in line with 15 hours left until the store opens. Suddenly they spot a woman checking her phone and they feverishly ask her if she knows whether the new iPhone will have 4G or not. After a short exchange of words though one of the fans checks her iPhone and reports the news that the iPhone they are standing in line for won’t feature 4G LTE.

Check the second video of the Apple-mocking series from Samsung:

I wonder if Samsung are going to release a third video to round up the series nicely. Interestingly, the action in the first one was taking place 9 hours until store opens, while this clip shows us the queue of people 15 hours until the opening. What do you reckon will happen next? Is Apple going to take some action in “I am a PC and I am a Mac” style?

Update: Well, as it turns out, there is a third one out there. In this one an iPhone and Galaxy S II owner are comparing availability of apps in both applications markets. Unsurprisingly, as it’s a Samsung commercial, the Android user has the winning hard stating that he gets to try the app before actually buying it. Here it goes.
